Beautiful baby photography in Edinburgh

Timeless baby photography in Edinburgh from Blue Sky Photography

Alie – is a super talented, experienced (and unflappable) baby photographer.  She has photographed newborns for years now and as a mum herself she know a thing or two about creating a relaxed, inviting environment for you and your newborn baby.

Your newborn or baby photography experience will take place in our beautiful, tranquil photography studio, on New Mart Road where you’ll be treated like friends (the coffee machine is always on and the kettle at the ready).

We believe timeless trumps trendy. Our baby shoots are all about relaxed cuddles and beautiful, intimate images without gimmicky hats and hammocks.  We treat your precious bundle with as much care as if they were our own.

Book a Discovery Call

It’s a chilled chat (on the phone or in person if you fancy a coffee, and of course baby is welcome – in fact sometimes it makes all the difference to baby to meet us and see the studio in advance) where we get to know more about you and who’s in your family. We’ll just ask a few simple questions so we can get to know you and what you’d love from your photography experience. You’ll talk, we’ll listen and then together we’ll create the photography experience that suits you, your family and the space in your home where you’d love to display your artwork.

02

Experience

The day of the photography experience is time for you and baby. The studio will be prepared for you in advance, so it’s time to slow down and let the magic happen. We’ll capture the images that matter and that show baby’s personality. Because we’ve chatted in advance we’ll know (literally) what we’re shooting for so we can take the photographs we know you’ll love. You should also know there’s plenty of space for feeding/changing/snoozing and of course playing.

03

Design

This is the exciting moment when you get to see the photographs you’ve imagined for the first time. We invite you back to the studio and you get to sit in our lounge and view all on the big screen. This is where you pick your photographs for the space you’ve already imagined. Because we’ve chatted in advance, we’ll have an idea of the products you love. This is all about selecting your favourite images. Important note – if you’re travelling a distance, we are happy to do this same day if it makes it easier.

04

Celebrate

You will live with artwork that celebrates your baby and this stage of life every day. A reminder that your little one is loved unconditionally and that your family is now at the centre of your home. It’s hard to define how important this will be to you (and your child) especially as the years go on.

“ I took my son to Blue Sky Photography to have photos taken for his first birthday. The photoshoot was very relaxed and Alie was so welcoming! The photographs turned out better than I could have imagined- they are beautiful and have totally captured our little boy’s personality. I know that we will treasure them for years to come.”

Newborn Photography

Baby photography frequently asked questions

Typically, the newborn baby stage is within the first 3 weeks and baby photography is from 3 weeks to a year. There’s no wrong choice and it’s whatever suits you as a family. Some families also love the idea of booking a few milestone photography experiences in baby’s first year – just ask as we can create this for you.

Here are some examples of the difference from a photography point of view
Newborn: Sleepy, curled up, squishy toes and details.
Baby: expressions, smiles, eye-contact, more likely to be awake

From a client point of view the difference is what you’d love to see
Newborn: how small they are in relation to you/your hands; capturing their tiny features
Baby: seeing their personality develop and how they interact with you and the world around

There are lots of great stages and again it’s what you’d love. Here are some example milestones (remember all babies hit these at different times so there’s no exact age, but these are guidelines)

  • 3–4 months: smiling and interaction; possibly grabbing toes
  • 6–8 months: sitting independently, tummy time
  • 9–12 months: crawling or maybe event standing
  • 1 year: birthday portraits

Both parents should be there if possible. Mainly because the photographs will last forever and it is always a delight to see both parents in the photographs, as well as individual ones of each of you as you will respond to baby in difference ways. Siblings are also always welcome (including four legged ones) and of course grandparents. This can be helpful from a support point of view but also it is the most precious thing to capture photographs of grandparents with their grandbabies.

We are a small studio and can only take on a limited number of bookings. If Blue Sky Photography is the one for you and your family, then get it in touch and we can look at dates. If you’re after a weekend, or an evening slot, best to get in touch as soon as possible as they are popular and get booked up quicker.

We would always say allow around an hour. This allows time for everyone to come in and get settled. We have plenty of space in the Blue Sky Photography studio for getting changed so feel free to bring outfits with you. You can relax in our lounge and we can spoil you with a top-notch coffee or cup of tea (the added bonus of coming to the studio is that we take our coffee and tea game very seriously)

First tip – plan and leave everything out the night before.
Here’s a quick checklist that might help:

  • Nappies and wipes
  • Two muslins/burp cloths
  • Extra milk (if bottle feeding) or your usual nursing supplies
  • An extra outfit for baby in case of nappy incidents
  • Snacks for you (we can provide tea and coffee by the bucketload but feel free to bring your favourites bites to eat)
  • A spare top for you and your partner in case of leaks
  • Dummy or Pacifier (I prefer the American word for this) even if baby doesn’t usually need one. We know this one can be controversial and it’s always up to individual parents, but it can be useful when you know baby isn’t hungry, for brief soothing between setups.
  • Favourite toys however squeaky or colourful they are. We can include in the photographs or have on the sidelines. Basically, we’re looking for baby to feel relaxed and happy. Seeing their little face light up with recognition at a favourite toy or noise is perfect for photographs.

We have lots of top tips for this that don’t need to involve shopping (unless you’re looking for a good excuse to get something new)
What you should wear depends a lot on what you love as a family and where in your home you’re going to display your photographs. We’ll have a chat with you in advance and can help guide you on this.

To make it easy stick to a small palette. Maybe just two or three different colours. Include texture rather than busy patterns. These neutrals keep attention where it belongs—on baby, while still making your skin tones look warm and glowing.

Keep your partner’s outfit simple. Something like a solid collared shirt, sweater or simple pullover with chinos or dark jeans. No logos or neon. (again if the logo is a non-negotiable for teens bring a couple of options and we can cover both)

We have a few styling boards that we’ll send to you in advance to help you prepare.

Yes absolutely. Anything that is unique to your family story you’re of course welcome to bring. For older babies it’s always great if you let us know favourites songs in advance as we can create a playlist. And we’re always up for singing if you are!

Family Photography experiences are £250 which includes a discovery call, the photography experience itself and £100 to put towards whichever product you like. Our mounted prints start at £200 and we have bundles available from £800. We’ll find out in advance at your discovery call what you’d like and where in your home you’d like to display your photographs.

Yes we include social media files included of whichever products you choose and if you choose one of our wall art collections you also have the option to upgrade to high resolution images. Remember we’re all about printed photographed first and foremost as that’s our skill set – from taking the photographs to editing them we understand print and have sourced some of the best products to display your photographs.

Yes we do so please just ask.

To book your session you need to pay your £250 fee.

We understand things happen in families and parents’ health is our number one priority. All we ask is that you give us as much notice as possible before re-scheduling. If you need to re-schedule more than once there may be an admin fee.

A great question and one you should ask. It’s super important for you to find a family photographer you can trust as it’s an important experience for you all. We understand that. It’s also important for us to connect with our clients so we can tell their story in an authentic way. With baby photography trust is key. You should choose a photographer who you connect with in style, but also in personality. At Blue Sky Photography we are patient and skilled at working with babies of all ages and their families! We’ve taken time to create a calm, welcoming spa-like space. Not only does it look beautiful, but it also smells great. Clients love the flow our studio gives and that helps them relax. We take time to make sure your family feels safe and comfortable. We use positive reinforcement and calm, gentle instructions to help everyone feel happy. As a mother and a photographer who has photographed babies for years I’ve also got oodles of patience and one or two tricks up my sleeve to help bring the magic.
